WHAT IS THE COST?
The cost of caucuses, assemblies and conventions are the responsibility of the county or district party organization for that particular county or district.
Donations may be taken, or fees may be charged to help cover the cost of the venue, office supplies, printing and other such expenses. Some counties use the funds they have raised to cover the costs of these meetings. The party is responsible for the cost of a person who is unable to pay for the fees. Often, the costs of such a person will be shared among their constituents so their allegiance will be where it should be, with their constituents.
The counties, districts and states will notify attendees of the costs prior to the meetings. Attendees pay for their own travel and lodging. In the past, the costs for most precinct caucuses, county assemblies and legislative assemblies have been less than $10. The cost for the State Assembly and Convention has been around $75. The cost for the National Convention is several thousand dollars, mostly because of the travel and lodging costs.
The cost of the caucuses in 2020 may be higher than in previous years when all caucuses were held on Tuesday evenings, as most schools are closed on Saturdays and staff must be paid for opening and monitoring the buildings. In the past, caucuses were held in homes within each precinct. The laws now say that all caucus sites must be accessible to individuals with disabilities, which disqualifies most homes and forces caucuses into public buildings, churches and the like.
